According to the General Department of Customs , in 2013 the export of cassava and cassava products reached 3.1 million tons with a turnover of $ 1.1 billion , down 25.7 % in volume and 18.6 % in terms of metal value compared with 2012. Vietnam's cassava yield currently stands around 10 in some countries high yield , with yield of 17.6 tons / ha .
The statistics also said the cassava growing area of the country has 560 thousand hectares , with a total production of nearly 9.4 million tons . 30 % yield obtained serve domestic demand for food , feed processing , pharmaceutical industry , as raw materials for biofuel production , industrial alcohol , etc. .. 70 % is exported exported in the form of starch or cassava . As of 2013 , there were six factories biofuels production using cassava as raw material in operation , nearly 100 processing plants and cassava starch processing hundreds of crafts, etc. . .
Cassava and cassava products are hot commodities growth in recent years and is dependent on imports if the domestic demand , therefore , susceptible cassava cultivation if the market reduced demand for imports . Currently, China 's import market cassava and cassava products from Vietnam's largest ( accounting for 85.6 % ) however exports of cassava and cassava products into the Chinese market in 2013 reached only 946.4 million, down 19.8 % compared with 2012. Due to the world economic crisis and the stagnation of the ethanol industry in China , the ethanol plant here has closed nearly 70 % , a reduced number of remaining capacity , the demand for imports also declined .
In addition, the export price of Vietnam cassava is reduced , in addition to high quality cassava inventory while supplies from other export markets ( such as Thailand and Indonesia ) are very large , competitive prices as well the cause of the decline in cassava exports to the Chinese market in particular and the world in general market . Therefore, the urgent requirement now is to actively market and especially the main priorities of the local market .
